John Dawson Watson (British, 1832-1892) Nothing, I’m Afraid this Morning, Miss Oil on canvas, signed and dated: “1881” lower right and titled on the reverse.
Painting size: 16” x 12” Watson trained to become a watercolorist, painter and illustrator at the Manchester School of Design and Royal Academy Schools. He was a prolific and notable illustrator for such publications as Once a Week, Good Words and London Society. He also illustrated numerous books including Pilgrim’s Progress and Arabian Nights. When not producing illustrations, he painted gene scenes often of children with a Pre-Raphaelite feeling for color and detail. He exhibited at the Royal Academy (1853-1890), British Institution, Society of British Artists Suffolk Street and Old Watercolor Society. Watson is listed in Dictionary of British Artists, Vol. IV, Victorian Painters by Wood. |
