When not producing illustrations, he painted gene scenes often of children with a Pre-Raphaelite feeling for color and detail. He exhibited at the Royal Academy (1853-1890), British Institution, Society of British Artists Suffolk Street and Old Watercolor Society. Watson is listed in Dictionary of British Artists, Vol. IV, Victorian Painters by Wood.
