View of the Nikolaikirche, Potsdam Carl Kayser-Eichberg (German, 1873-1964) Oil-on-board, signed lower left corner.
Painting size: 12.75” x 17” The dome of the Nikolaikirche, the principle church of Potsdam’s town center, was a reocurring theme in Carl Kayser-Eichberg’s work, suggesting a certain affection for the subject. In this peaceful cityscape, the buildings surrounding the church are reflected in the River Havel, creating strong vertical forms that pull the eye up towards the dome. Painted circa 1910, Kayser-Eichberg’s rendering of Nikolaikirche is particularly evocative as it predates the tragedies of World War II when Allied forces bombed the city and nearly destroyed the church. The Nikolaikirche has since been restored. Carl Kayser-Eichberg is listed in Allgemeines Lexikon der bildenden Künstler von der Antike bis zu Gegenwart (Thieme/Becker, 1992) and Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs (Bénézit, 1999). |
