The Columns, Venice Gianni (Italian, 19th Century) Watercolor on paper, signed lower left.
Sight size: 15.5” x 6.5” The Giannis were a family of painters who produced watercolor scenes of Italian cities and ports, especially Naples. This painting shows the grand columns of St. Mark and St. Theodore in the Piazza of San Marco, Venice. In the background across the canal are the domes of the Chiesa Santa Maria della Salute. The care with which these historic buildings are rendered against the fabled Venetian blue sky suggests that Giannis’ paintings were produced for tourist consumption. At the base of St. Mark’s column, a cluster of women and children gather wearing simple clothes and head covers. Their casual presence indicates that this romantic setting is, for some people, simply home. |
