Born in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary, Toth moved to Paris at the age of 22 to study painting. However, despite his relocation he could never completely leave behind his Hungarian roots. Toth had been an accomplished mazurka dancer as a teenager, and his love of dancing and movement were a source of inspiration to him until his death in 1972.
