Pastel on brown paper, signed lower left corner.
Portrait painter Frederick Rice Webster was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and studied art at the Royal Academy in Munich. Though based in Chicago, he undertook a series of portrait commissions in Los Angeles between 1912 and 1913.
The languid hand-behind-the-head pose of this unidentified young woman in a black evening dress recalls the glamour of 1930’s Hollywood.
