William Henry Coffin (American, 1812-1898)

Clipper Ship with Pilot Boat

Oil on metal panel, signed.

Painting size: 12 x 18
Frame size: 15 x 21

Little is known about the life of William Henry Coffin. However, he was most likely the son of art teacher William Coffin, Jr. who advertised for students in the Nantucket Inquirer, 1824-1828. Thought to be a native of Nantucket, it is presumed that he lived there until circa 1863. Although no death records are available, it is known that he remained an active artist until 1898. Today his work can be found in the Peabody Essex Museum.
