John Hassell was an engraver and drawing master as well as a prolific author. He produced a biography of his friend, the well known artist, George Morland, as well as treatises on watercolour painting and a series of elaborate guide books illustrated by aquatints from his own drawings. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1789.
