Georgina Martha De L’Aubiniere
Landscape with Spires in the Distance
Oil on canvas, signed and dated: “1886”.
Painting size: 16” x 10”
Although L’Aubiniere was the daugther of English watercolorist John Steeple, and the wife of French artist Constant de L'Aubiniére, she was an accomplished artist in her own right. She studied under Corot and Gérôme in France, and traveled extensively with her husband, painting, lecturing and exhibiting right alongside him. In fact, while living in Canda the government commissioned both she and her husband to paint 14 portraits as gifts for Queen Victoria. Eventually, she returned to her native England where she continued to paint and exhibit until her death in 1930.
