Aristide Maillol (French, 1861-1944) Bringing Farm Products to Town Woodcut in sepia with monogram stamp. Illustration for “Les Georgiques” by Virgil, 1937-1943, published by Phillipe Gonin, Paris. Reference: Rewald, John. The Woodcuts of Aristide Maillol. (1939).
Image size: 5.75” x 6.75” Maillol was a gifted artist and sculptor of international renown. In 1885 he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts where he studied under the likes of Gérôme and Cabanel. Later, a friendship with Paul Gaugin led him to work in tapestry design but, ultimately, he abandoned that profession for sculpture- the medium where he most excelled. Maillol received numerous public commissions, and was even called upon to create a memorial for Cézanne, as well as Claude Debussy. Today, his work can be found at the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Musée du Petit Palais, and his own Musée Maillol among many others. Source: Benezit. Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs. (1999). |
