A rare pair of faux bois planters in the form of tree trunks, probably manufactured by Portland Stone Ware in Maine ca 1880 (the company is still in business). These are heavy-duty ceramic pieces designed to withstand the frigid winter climate. Original etchings by Francois Perrier (1590-1650, who signed his work "Bourguignon") published in 1638 as "Icones et Segmenta Nobil....". A Frenchman who spent years in Rome and was inspired by classical statuary, these particular etchings were inspired by the male form.
