| This offering is for a very well cut 7” diameter bowl in “Ontario” by Bergen. It is cut into a Libbey hand-blown blank that is 3” deep and marked with an acid etched star in the inside bottom. It has eight bull’s eyes with strawberry diamond, fans and hobstars as the minor motifs. The miters are deep and precise as would be expected of the Bergen cutting-house. The bottom is cut with a 12-point hobstar inside of a 24-point hobstar. This beautiful cut crystal bowl is in very fine condition with the serrated teeth showing very little wear with no chipped or broken teeth. According to J. Michael Pearson in his definitive “Encyclopedia of American Cut and Engraved Glass (1880-1917), Volume II: Realistic Patterns”, © 1977, pages 19 and 20, the acid etched star was indicative of a hand-blown, Libbey blank that was cut most often by Straus but occasionally by others. This must include Bergen since this is his pattern “Ontario” as shown in the American Cut Glass Association’s burgundy Bergen Catalogue © 2002, page 12. It glows a lime green under ultraviolet light. | ||
