| This very unusual celluloid ruler/letter opener is from THE HYNSON, WESTCOTT & DUNNING PHARMACEUTICAL LABORATORY of BALTIMORE, MARYLAND. It advertises some of the products produced by this well-known company. Of particular interest are SALVARSAN and NEOSALVARSAN. Salvarsan was the first ORGANIC ANTI-SYPHILITIC. It came to market in 1910. NEOSALVARSAN was the second ORGANIC ANTI-SYPHILITIC. It came to market in 1912. Both of these products were considered an improvement over the older MERCURY based remedies. But these products were ARSENIC BASED. They had their own potential problems with side effects (but then, consider the alternative!). Both of these remedies were displaced by the availability of penicillin in the 1940's.
