Robert Van Vorst Sewell, American 1860-1924
Oil on canvas, 25.5" x 35.5" view on the Copper river, near Cordova, Alaska--fully signed and dated 1914 lower left. Framed in period frame, approx. 33" x 43". Sewell painted Alaska views and this is an exemplary example of his tour to Alaska. Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store: Painter, muralist. Born in NYC in 1860. Sewell studied in Paris with Lefebvre and Boulanger. His known works include landscapes and coastals of California. He maintained a studio home in Oyster Bay, NY and died while vacationing in Florence, Italy on Nov. 18, 1924. Member: ANA; NY Arch. League; Century Assn; Union League Club; Lotos Club. Exh: NAD, 1889 (prize); Boston, 1891 (medal); Pan Am Expo, Buffalo, 1901 (medal); Louisiana Purchase Expo (St Louis), 1904 (medal).
