William Hekking, American born 1885-1970
Oil on canvas, Approx. 15" x 21.5" Signed and dated 1909. Bio from ask art.com: Born Chelsea, WI, Mar. 10, 1885;. died Portland, ME, May 1970. Painter. Illustrator. Etcher. Teacher. Graduated from Syracuse University in 1908. Studied with Richard Miller at the Art Students League, NY, and with John Paul Laurens at the Academié Julian in Paris. Taught at University of Kansas, Lawrence, 1916-22, as a drawing instructor. In 1923 he was Director of Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts and Columbus Art School in Ohio. In 1925 he was Director of Albright Art Gallery in Buffalo, 101 NY, and from 1937-37 was an art critic for Buffalo Evening News. Served as a curator of art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1937-38.
