| Oil on masonite panel, signed and dated 1970. 18" x 24" panel size in what appears to be the original frame, approx. 24" x 30" Bio from askart.com: Rosenfeld, a native of the city of Baltimore, once told an interviewer, "My ambition in life was to be a sign painter. The first time I saw someone leaning over way up high on a scaffold, I knew what I wanted to be." He achieved this goal working for Standard Oil until his artistic potential was recognized, and the company sent him to night school at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Rosenfeld specialized in views of his beloved city and was greatly admired for the honesty of his vision and for his rejection of prevailing fads and conceits. Richmond Market was located not far from the artist's inner city home. Rosenfeld's paintings were exhibited at the Museum in 1960. Rosenfeld was born in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from The Maryland Institute. Over the years, he studied with many well-known American artists, particularly with Waldo Pierce when both were working with the WPA Art Program. Rosenfeld is probably best known in the Baltimore area as the sparkplug who rejuvenated Tyson Street by purchasing an old home and converting it into a model home and studio. His efforts encouraged others to buy up the block and Rosenfeld was affectionately known as the "Mayor of Tyson Street." He enjoyed painting scenes associated with daily life from the hustle of the city streets and harbor to Mount Vernon Place. His works include glimpses of city life -- bustling urban markets and intimate neighborhood views -- and landscapes painted in expressive compositions bordering on the abstract. | ||
