| Oil on canvas, 20" x 24" oil on canvas and in a carved and gilt arts and crafts style frame, approx. 29" x 32" Biography from AskART: The following information was submitted in October of 2006 by Barry Huffman Marian Winslow Hungerford (1896-2000) Miss Marian Hungerford was born in 1896 and spent most of her life in New Britain, Connecticut. She studied art at Skidmore College, then jewelry making at the Pratt Institute. Miss Hungerford had a summer cottage in Old Lyme. In 1938, she began to study painting under Gregory Smith, continuing with him until 1958. She became an exhibiting member of the Old Lyme Art Association in 1958, continuing to paint until 1982. Miss Hungerford was elected to Connecticut Women Artist, an organization founded in 1929, and to the Connecticut Academy. In the early 1990’s, she moved to Hickory, North Carolina, to be near her nieces. Miss Hungerford was deaf most of her life. Known for her impressionist landscapes of Connecticut lakes and rivers and salt water marshes, she also painted houses and harbor scenes. Included in her oeuvre are watercolors and monoprints. She is listed in Davenport’s and Mallett. | ||
