Large and elegant majolica vase - planter, French, or possibly English, and finely decorated by hand in the Japonisme - Chinoiserie taste of the late 19th century Aesthetic Period. This piece is in perfect condition with no damage or wear. Even the gilded accents and highlights, meant to make the design look like fine Japanese lacquer work, are unworn and bright. The hand-painted decoration features flowers, fruits, leaves, a bird, and a scenic panel, painted in black with gold tracery, over a fine blue-gray streaked background. The designs are raised, giving the piece a dimensional feel. The planter stands on eight shaped feet and the top rim is scalloped, with maroon glazed vertical panels running down the corners and a light blue interior. This piece has the remains of it's original 19th century label as well as impressed numbers and letters on the bottom. The numbers read "229" and the letters appear to read "L&S" (hard to read), possibly the makers mark. This planter measures 7.25" tall, 7.25" wide, and 6.25" deep. Circa 1875 - 1885.
