Large and striking, original pencil-signed and numbered lithograph by well-known modern French artist, Bernard Buffet (1928-1999). This piece is titled "Insect" and is presently matted and framed in it's original black and gold-leaf modernist frame. The work is signed in pencil, lower right, "Bernard Buffet" and numbered, lower left, "58/150". In addition there are two labels on the back from the Vincent Price Collection, indicating provenance and authenticity. This lithograph dates to circa 1965.
This piece measures: Frame - 31.5" x 36.5" / Image (sight through matte) - 20.75" x 26.75" / This hand-pulled stone lithograph depicts an insect or "Diptère" as Buffet's 1963 painting of the same subject was titled. It was printed on thick, watermarked Arches paper and is a strong fine impression using four colors. Bernard Buffet's paintings and prints are held in virtually every important museum and private collection of modern art and there are many books and internet pages dedicated to his life and modernist, representational works. This piece is part of a series of images of insects and animals that he created during the early 1960s. This work is guaranteed to be authentic and has provenance from 'The Vincent Price Collection' with appropriate labels on the back of the frame. The Vincent Price collection was a series of original works of art (selected by the famous actor and art collector) by many of the great masters including Rembrandt, Chagall, Picasso, Whistler and the best contemporary artists of the time, that were offered for sale on a retail basis by Sears Department Stores. This program lasted nine years and many fine original pieces by very famous artists were sold. This lithograph is in excellent condition with no damage or restorations. It is not laid down, still has it's full margins, and is nicely framed with plexiglass protecting the work. The frame has light wear but the piece is ready to display, as shown. Please excuse the reflections in the last image, taken outdoors to give an idea of the large size of the piece. A beautiful and rare modernist image by Bernard Buffet. |
