Fine old Arts and Crafts period handwrought copper vase by well-known San Francisco
metalsmith, Dirk Van Erp. This piece dates to about 1915 - 1918 and has his famous 'windmill' mark
stamped on the bottom. The mark is an open-box version with remnants of "D'ARCY GAW" above the words,
"DIRK VAN ERP". In addition, the open part of the box has the slight"hook" on the lower line, and the words, "SAN FRANCISCO" are stamped below the windmill mark. This particular combination of characteristics to the mark dates the piece to about 1915 - 1918. Size: diameter - 5.5" / height - 3.5" Weight: 1 lb. 3 oz. This "bean pot" style vase is made of a medium to heavy hand-hammered copper. It has a finely rolled rim and quintessential arts and crafts form, featuring fine even hammerwork and a gently sloped shoulder. The surface appears to have its original untouched chocolate brown patina, which is slightly worn and spotted in places (see photos). The inside of the vase shows some green oxidation and a general thin encrustation over the copper, probably due to this piece having been used as a planter at some point in time. However, it is not corroded though or damaged. The quality of the hammerwork and the rolled rim point to this pot having been made by Van Erp himself rather than one of his workers (in my opinion). A fine, authentic example of Dirk Van Erp copper. |
