"Mount Hood - Oregon's Pride" Framed Oil on Canvas by Sobrina Lathrop 1917 Large and beautiful early Northwest - Oregon painting, depicting a landscape of Mt. Hood and vicinity, by listed artist, Sobrina Lathrop. This work dates to 1917 and was done with oils on stretched canvas. The painting is mounted in a period carved and gold-painted Arts and Crafts style frame, which may be original to the work. The painting is signed by the artist on the front, lower left and in addition there is an inscription on the back of the canvas that reads: Mount Hood. Oregon's Pride This same information is also repeated on a typewritten label on the old heavy cardboard protective backing (please see photos). This painting is quite large measuring 20" x 30" The painting depicts a wonderful and historic view of the Oregon wilderness. Mount Hood is in the distance, with colorful canyons and wooded plateaus leading up to it. In the middle ground is a beautiful blue gem-like lake with an early sailboat near the far shore. The foreground is very interesting with a man standing on the road, facing the viewer, holding a walking stick and wearing old period clothes. There are trees and a deep forest to the left and in the center, a deep gully that leads down to the lake and has a fallen tree trunk lying in it. The view is very similar to the painting that is on the cover of the book, "Oregon Painters: The First Hundred Years (1859-1959)", and so may have been painted in a nearby location. Although not much biographical information has surfaced about her, Sobrina Lathrop (also spelled 'Sabrina' in some references) is a well-listed California - Northwest artist, with listings in many art references including: Davenport's Art Reference, AskArt.com, Artnet.com, and, Artists in California 1786 - 1940. Below is a short biography from "Artist's In California" by Edan Hughes: Sabrina P. Lathrop. Painter. While a resident of Oakland, California in 1888-1906, Mrs. Lathrop worked as a colorist for photographer F.A. Webster. In her leisure she painted still lifes, and landscapes of Yosemite and Northern California. Her rare works are signed simply "Lathrop". During 1896 she worked in Los Angeles. The painting is in excellent original condition. It does not really need a cleaning (in my opinion) although there is some very slight soiling to the surface (probably slightly yellowed varnish). No previous restorations are visible. There are no damages, crazing, or missing paint, and the work is ready to display. The painting still retains its original stretcher bars and the classic Arts and Crafts carved and gold-painted frame is in excellent condition, with some slight wear, but no damage. This is an early, historic, large and beautiful Northwest painting, signed, titled, and dated, and is of museum quality. |
