Pre Columbian Coquero Figure - Narino-Carchi c.1200 AD
A very fine sitting 'Coquero' figure, from the Narino - Carchi culture that inhabited the highlands of southern Columbia and northern Ecuador. Circa 1000 AD - 1400 AD.

This piece measures approximately 7.5" tall, 4" wide, and 4.25" deep.

This ancient terracotta ceramic scupture depicts a male figure, seated on a bench, with both hands on his knees. He is a coca chewer and is shown with his cheek bulging with coca leaf. His face is decorated with painted facial tatoos, ears pierced, his coffee-bean eyes staring straight ahead as if in a trance, and he is wearing a woven chest-band slung over his shoulder and attached to a loin cloth.

Narino - Carchi 'Coquero' figures are rare and this piece is a very fine example, with distinct sculptural qualities and very expressive features. This piece has some provenance: It was purchased from the Gold Mask Gallery in Quito, Ecuador on December 27th, 1987, imported into the United States at that time, and I purchased it from that owner in December, 2000. It has been in my own collection since that time. This piece comes with the original dated authentification certificate from the gallery in Quito.

This piece is in excellent excavated (probably from a tomb) condition with the following noted: Left arm appears to have been re-attached at the shoulder and wrist. Small loss on left wrist. Left foot and corner of base appear to have been re-attached (see photos). No restoration. Normal wear and ancient encrustation to the bench and lower part of the figure. Strong traces of the original black painted details on the face, hair, belt and loin cloth.

Guaranteed authentic.
