"Algonquin Park" Ontario, Canada Landscape - Indistinctly Signed - Circa 1940 Finely painted Canadian oil painting in it's original impressionist frame, depicting an expansive winter landscape in the well-known Algonquin Park, Ontario. This painting was done with oils on stretched canvas and dates to the 1940s. The painting measures 10.5" x 14" and the frame measures 17" x 20.5". The painting is signed on the front, but the signature is hard to read and indistinct, possibly "Etis" or something similar. The back of the frame has penciled inscriptions, including the title / location of the work "ALGONQUIN PARK", as well as inscriptions which appear to read "Pettishaw Catt '42" but also indistinct (please see photos). So although the artist remains unidentified, the stylized brushwork, the colors, and the cubist style depiction of the northern woodland scene are uniquely Canadian in manner and execution. The landscape shows a farm or homestead cabin in the distance, covered in snow, and with the colors of the setting sun upon the snow. There are stylized, almost abstracted trees in the foreground and a wood fence points the viewer into the scene. The brushwork is very fine and the style of the painting is reminiscent of works by Rockwell Kent, Lauren Harris, Edwin Holgate and other modernist painters of the North. This painting is in excellent condition with no damage or previous restoration. The frame is also in good condition, with light wear in places. The painting is very attractive and ready to display. The price of this piece includes insured shipping by UPS Ground, within the continental United States! |
