"Woman & Child" by F. Manrique L. South American Modernist Sculpture, C. 1960 Beautiful wood sculpture-carving from Bolivia, South America circa 1950s - 1960s. The sculpture is signed by the artist on the bottom with a carved-in signature: "F. MANRIQUE L." The sculpture is done very much in the Modernist style of Latin American artists such as Francisco Zuniga, Diego Rivera, and Jose Clemente Orozco. This piece measures 5.5" tall x 3.25" at its widest point. This wood sculpture was masterfully carved by a very skillful artist. It depicts a mother with her hands folded and head bowed in contemplation, with her child slung to her back. The entire carving is made from a solid piece of reddish wood, with the woman's hair and eyes painted black. The details of this carving are very beautiful, especially in the face and hands. This sculpture is in excellent condition, as shown in the photographs, with no damage or restoration. |
