Museum Quality African Slingshot - Baule Female Figure
Old Baule Figural Slingshot - Côte d'Ivoire ~ Africa

Museum quality, carved and painted hardwood figural slingshot originating from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast of Africa.

This piece dates from the early to mid 20th century (probably 1940s - 1950s) and shows definite signs of age and use. The object is mounted on a professionally made contemporary museum-style base and stand.

Size:

7.5" tall x 3" wide x 1" deep (including stand).

African slingshots are used to hunt small animals and birds, primarily by young boys. The slings are usually made by the father of the boy who may or may not be a sculptor by trade. However, wealthy families often commissioned sculptors to carve slings for their boys. These two factors explain the general discrepancies in the artistic quality of the slings.

This slingshot reflects the artistry, power, and authority of a professional Baule sculptor as can be seen by the fine proportions and expertly stylized depiction of the Baule female figure. It is a fine example of miniature Baule sculpture.

This piece is in beautiful condition showing a fine overall patina, featuring smooth glossy wear to the edges of the figure and losses of paint in the areas where the slingshot was held during use. The exposed wood areas have darkened from oxidation and skin oils and there are no losses or restorations to the piece. It is a museum-quality example, with beautiful details, form, and paint, and in the exact condition most desired by collectors.

This work will be a quality addition to any collection of African art or weapons and look great in any Tribal, Ethnographic, Mid Century, or Eames Era Modernist decor. The price of this piece includes insured shipping by USPS Priority Mail within the United States. We are happy to hear from you by e-mail if you have any questions or need more information.
