Old British Arts & Crafts Wood Bowl-"Mouseman" Thompson
British Arts and Crafts Wood Bowl by Robert "Mouseman" Thompson

Fine old Arts and Crafts lathe-turned and hand-carved dark oak bowl by Robert "Mouseman" Thompson of Kilburn, North Yorkshire, England.

This piece was likely made in the 1950s and is in the form of a footed bowl with a sculptured mouse in the center, all made from one piece of oak. The piece is unsigned, as are all "Mouseman" pieces, as the mouse itself is his signature.

Size: 11.5" diameter / 2.5" tall

This piece features a beautiful adzed, faceted surface on the outside of the bowl and the hand-carving marks on the inside give the piece a subtle handmade quality and look. The mouse is beautifully carved in detail, in the Mouseman's traditional manner.

Robert (Mouseman) Thompson (1876 – 1955) was a British furniture maker. He lived in Kilburn, North Yorkshire, where he set up a business manufacturing oak furniture, which featured a carved mouse on almost every piece. He was part of the 1920s revival of craftsmanship, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement led by William Morris, John Ruskin and Thomas Carlyle. His company is still in business today, run by his descendants and still making furniture and decorative arts.

This piece is in great condition with no cracks or repairs. There are a few very small dents to the rim of the bowl, not very apparent, but mentioned for accuracy. The bowl shows some wear to the foot and has a nice soft and rich patina from use over the years.
