Pair of English Victorian Lamps-Staffordshire Figures
Early English Staffordshire Figures mounted as Lamps.

A fine pair of Staffordshire soft-paste porcelain figures, circa 1860s, and now mounted as lamps (circa 1940s-1950s). These figures are titled, respectively, "Prince of Wales" and "Princess" on the base, in raised gilded letters. The fine black cloth shades are contemporary and high quality.

Size: Total lamp height - 25" / width ( of shade) 14" / depth (of shade) - 9". Figures only - height - 13.5" / width - 9"

The large pottery figures are completely original and in great condition. This set of figures was very popular in Victorian England and several Staffordshire potteries made them. These examples have crisp molding and are nicely painted in a full-color palette which includes some gilding to the details.

They look great as lamps, although they could probably also be taken off the base and displayed as just figures if desired.

Often, during the 1940s and 1950s, good Staffordshire figures were made into decorative lamps. Although I have not taken the bottoms off the lamps, they have been made in a way that does not destroy the figurine by drilling. The figures are mounted on nicely made white-painted wooden bases with the stem extending from the back of the bases, in the correct manner. The bottoms of the wood bases are covered with felt so as not to scratch any surfaces. Each lamp has two sockets and the lamps appear to have been re-wired fairly recently. There are in-line, two-position hand switches, as well as the original pull-chain switches on the sockets. Both lamps work well and can be switched on to full or half power using the in-line switches.

The Staffordshire figures themselves are in excellent condition with no damage, no chips, and no previous repairs. You will notice what looks like some hairlines to the base of the "Princess" figure, however these are factory firing flaws and are glazed over, not damage. This kind of factory flaw is very common on these early Staffordshire figures and most show this kind of minor defect.

These lamps will be a beautiful addition to any collection of British pottery and look great in any Victorian, Edwardian, Classical, Folk Art, or Country Style decor.

The price of this piece includes insured shipping by UPS Ground within the United States. We are happy to hear from you by e-mail if you have any questions or need more information.
