Hand Colored Engraving of Mexico c.1750 French Artist
Exceptional hand coloring on this brilliant copper engraving by Pierre-Quentin Chedel, a noted French engraver of architecture, landscape and views. I believe it is from Prevost's , Histoire Generale des Voyages, a most influential travel book in mid 1700. Titled Nouveau Mexico, it is of a bird's eye view of Mexico City, after the Spanish Conquest, showing the results of Spanish drainage and waterworks projects. There is a center fold as issued, (which shows up more in the photos) and wide margins. The condition is very good with 2 small stains on the left. The mat has a line of hand gilding. Full size measures 10" X 13 3/4", engraved marks 11" X 7 1/2"
