Antique Italian Shadow Work Embroidered Linen Sheet
This is a magnificent example of Punto Ombra or Shadow Work from turn of the century. A specialty revived in Italy at the time, it is stitched very closely in the Herringbone Stitch on the back side of the linen, creating a bas-relief effect on the front. The rich blue of the floss shows through creating the shadow. Characteristically it is usually combined with other traditional needlework techniques, such as padded satin stitch, shown in the padded blue pearls or dots, and pulled thread filling stitches , in the center of the stylized tulips. All 3 sides of the turndown has tiny little hand stitched 5" waves of replique. And of course the bottom hem is hemstitched by hand! The turn of the century saw a rebirth of this work in Italy with a group of women producing very high quality work referencing floral motifs as well as many other classical designs. Thia fabulous lightweight linen sheet is a perfect example of most professional Punto Ombra work! I discovered it in Italy, unused and have studied it for over a year before I took photos. Yep, I did try it out....heavenly! Now freshly laundered and pressed it, of course only using mild detergent and NEVER bleach! It had storage stains which have all come out but for small slight remnants near the bottom,(which will disappear with further laundering) and I've found only one broken stitch. It measures 95" X 104", with a 25" turndown. My photos don't do justice to this piece! the 5th photo shows the stitching on the reverse side. Truly a work of art to adorn your nest ,feeling so cool and drapey as well.
