A truly fine example of a Pre-Columbian Peruvian Chimu /Inca blackware jar. This choice piece is intact and measures a full 9" to the top of the double stirrup with a monkey adorno at the base of one stirrup and is 5 1/2 " in diameter. It has been highly burnished to perfection and is outstanding in design and workmanship. It dates from AD 1200-1500. It has a squared lower spout and saucer form body with upper interesting ringshapped raised concentric ring ornamentation. Pre-Columbian Oustanding Moche Fine-line Stirrup Vessel With Dual Motifs. This fantastical Moche Stirrup Vessel comes from the Pacific coast of Peru and dates from AD500-800. It is 7 1/2 “ in diameter and stands 6” in height. It is comprised of a medium-orange burnished clay and painted with two stunning scenes. One side shows two condors or vultures devouring a human figure while the opposite side shows another pair of birds of prey attacking a sea lion as it appears to be diving to avoid the onslaught. One of the birds appears to be perched on a cactus. This piece is truly dazzling in design and workmanship. The spout has had minor restoration to a break and has been repaired and reattached with minimal touch up to only the spout area. The vessel is otherwise totally intact with no overpaint or restoration of any kind. AN ALMOST IDENTICAL SET OF PRE-COLUMBIAN MOCHE JARS FROM PERU.These unsurpassable vessels date from AD100-800 and are almost identical with only a slight difference in the length of their side mounted stirrup spouts. They measure approximately six and three fourths inches in height with six and one fourth inch diameters and are guaranteed authentic in all ways. Their basic slip color is a soft burnt orange with raised snail motifs surrounding the vessel in a slightly lighter shade of gold/brown. The upper neck of the vases have stylized avian motifs in a soft golden yellow. Note that the center of the jars have a cup-shaped bottom and were most likely used to hold ground herbs or other ceremonial powders which could be inhaled. The spouts on the sides are hollow and allow liquids to fill the vessel for drinking use. I would prefer to keep them together as a set but I would possibly consider splitting them up and selling them individually. They really are fantastic and rare expressions of creativity from the ancient past of Peru.

A LARGE CHAVIN BOTTLE WITH INCISED AND RAISED ELEMENTS. This great offering is from coastal Peru dating from AD100-800 and is guaranteed absolutely authentic in all ways. It is a greyware or sometimes called "smudgeware" piece measuring seven and one half inches in height and five inches in width. It is beautifully balanced in both design and shape. The generous spout is lovingly burnished and the main body has incised lines and three raised elements that could represent birds, peanuts, seals, or whatever your imagination will allow. It is far superior to the plainware Chavin bottles being offerd on the market today in the same price range. You are getting much more for your money and a fine piece of ancient artwort as well.

AN ABSORBING MATCHED SET OF MOCHE POTRAIT VESSELS.This is an amazing find comprised of two almost identical Moche greyware jars. They measure five inches tall by five and a half inches in diameter and date from AD100-800 from a site in Northern Peru. They are absolutely authentic with no restoration or overpaint. These two fascinating jars do not need a lot of explanation. Just have a close look at the photographs and you will see every detail. Remember, the price is for the pair and I really would rather not split up the set. They were found together and should stay together if at all possible.

AN ELEGANT HAIRPIECE OF TORTOISE SHELL...SOMETIMES CALLED "A PRINCESS COMB" I acquired this piece from a family here in Hawaii. I was told it belonged to their grandmother who was a master at "lomi-lomi" massage around the turn of the century.In exchange for services items such as this were often given in lieu of money. It has two tines missing and a couple of small flea bites to the upper part of the comb but as you can see in the photos it is in remarkable condition for its age.

This superb Churiqui mini-tripod vessel comes from the border area of Costa Rica and Panama and most nearly resembles the Diquis phase. It is absolutely authentic in all ways and dates c.a. AD500-1550. See "Pre-Columbian Art of Costa Rica" published by The Detroit Institute Of Arts (pg. 76) for more information. There has been very little archaeological work done in this area until the last few years so much of the history of this culture remains to be uncovered and brought to light. This small tripod vessel measures three and one fourth inches in diameter and stands four inches tall. Three charming animal faces appear at the top of each slightly flaring leg. They have their hands hiding part of their faces and deeply incised eyes and fingers. The jar itself is ovoid in shape with a flaring rim and two braided handles with perforations that go completely through for possible hanging or they could just be part of the decorative elements of the jar. The warmth and humor of the potter shines through in the care that was used to hand-make this piece. No molds were used and all detail was hand applied with great care.

PRE-COLUMBIAN MOCHE PHYTOMORPHIC VESSEL This is one of those odd and wonderful creations of an ancient artist. It is a Moche piece dating from A.D.100-800 from the coastal area of Northern Peru. It measures seven inches in height and four and one half inches in diameter. The upper section with handle portrays a beautifully sculpted face of a Moche Noble. The quality is so fine that it could even be viewed as a portrait vessel piece. It is in mint condition and absolutely authentic. The jar sits on a small pedestal with one side having raised bumpy areas possibly representing a squash while the other two matching sides have raised elongated forms resembling the fluting found in pumpkins. A great work of imagination and creative ability.

This miniscule Colima charmer measures a mere three inches in diameter and two and one half inches in height and dates from 250 B.C.-250A.D. It is burnished to a deep mellow orange and has tiny white dots speckled around the perimeter. It is perfectly formed and balanced for such a small piece and shows great care and fine craftsmanship in its creation. It could have been used as a "poison" or make-up jar or might have been a child's toy. Without written records it leaves much to the imagination. Tiny but proud.

A GENTLE EXAMPLE OF PRE-COLUMBIAN MOCHE PERUVIAN ART. This soft and kind stirrup vessel dates from 500-800AD from the northern coastal area of ancient Peru. It is nine inches in height and five and one half inches in diameter. The spouted stirrup jar depicts an abstract relief decoration with stylized wave patterns cresting with long beaked birds heads. The vessel has a red-brown base with painted white highlighted areas. There are strong mineral deposits on the surface which help attest to its ancient origin. The spout and chimney have been professionally reattached and the vessel is otherwise intact and in overall excellent condition. Many Moche vessels depict the more violent war-like side of the Moche culture and it is a pleasure to see a piece with soft colors and an overall sense of serenity in lieu of fighting bird warriors and the combat scenes representing power and bloodshed so often depicted on stirrup vessels from the period.

A TOTALLY INTRIGUING GLOBULAR ANTHROMORPHIC VESSEL CREATED BY THE MOCHE CULTURE OF ANCIENT PERU. This picturesque jar comes from the Northern Coast of Peru and dates from A.D.100-860. It stands eight and one half inches in height and measures five and one-half inches in diameter. A Moche male figure with an open spout sits perched atop a globular base. He has wide almond shaped eyes and wears a headpiece tightly wrapped around the forehead in the front and falling to a rounded base at the rear. The open areas are beautifully burnished and the lower part of the jar has a raised stippled motif. He sits with legs askew and clasped hands peering out into the distance. The round section of the jar most likely represents a squash or melon which is open to interpretation but most authorities seem to agree that figures perched upon vegetable-like forms acted as protectors of the harvest. However you choose to see him, he has great charm and presence and is in mint condition as well as having been masterfully designed and fabricated centuries ago.
