SIZE: 3 1/2" in height by 3 1/2" in width PROVENANCE: A Scottsdale Arizona Gallery Description: An exceptional jar of unparalleled quality of construction and a fantastical design motif. The vessel is a canteen shaped tan terracotta jar with a circular base leading up to a tapering spout. The central design is a bas relief scene on both sides of the body. It depicts a warrior in intricate full regalia posed in a fighting stance surrounded by eight human skulls. The jar has diagonal ribbing on both side panels. The piece is abundantly highlighted with red cinnabar. There is one miniscule hairline stabilized crack. The piece is otherwise intact and as found with no overpaint or restoration.

Meza family...collected in the 60's DESCRIPTION: A massive hollow terracotta seated female figure with her legs tucked under a short waist length skirt. Her right hand is resting on her waist and her left hand on her lower thigh. She has noded shoulders (most likely representing ceremonial scarification.) She is wearing large disc ear ornaments and her head wrap has crossed ties and a central crest. She is bare breasted and her face is well defined and highly expressive with beautiful well formed eyes. Faded black pigment is evident above her eye area. She has been reassembled from approximately eight large pieces with restoration over the break lines. A stunning example of the type!

POTTERY TYPE: Cedar Creek /Black on White ORIGIN: White Mountain area of East Arizona AGE: Ca. 1300 - 1325 A. D. SIZE: 8 1/2” in height by 9” in diameter DESCRIPTION: A beautifully coiled and fired olla. The shape is almost perfect. The exterior is slipped with white clay and painted with black vegital paint (as opposed to ground mineral pigments.) The geometric elements include “eye” motifs circling the rim, zig-zag lines, fine line netting, wide black lines, and four figures nearing the upper rim...most likely stylized macaws. It is a rare form and the workmanship for the period is superior. Many pieces from this culture have runny and sloppy paint work. It has been professionally reassembled from several large segments with the crack lines covered over. It has less than 1% restoration. PROVENANCE: Former Hyatt Collection.

SIZE: 4 1/2" in height by 3 1/2" in width DESCRIPTION: A solid molded noble or warrior sitting in a cross legged position with his hands resting on his knees. The figure is both composed and confident. He is stately with his elaborate ornamentation which includes a finely twisted and knotted cap, decorative scarification or tatooing on his upper arms, double bracelets on each upper arm, a necklace with two large pendants, and a loin cloth tied at the side with hanging tassels and a wide incised panel at the rear. He is skillfully and elegantly sculpted. Numerous mineral formations attest to his great age. A very fine example of the type.

ORIGIN: Casas Grandes Mexico AGE. Ca. 1200 A. D. - 1400 A. D. SIZE: 7 1/2" in height by 6" at the widest diameter DESCRIPTION: A beautifully conceived and executed ovoid jar. Geometric designs include quadrangles, upside down triangles, lightning bolt elements, two "x" symbols, and fine line elements.The Casas Grandes area of Northern Mexico was the premiere trading center for all of Central America as well as South America from 1200 - 1400 A. D. The main site, Paquime, traded macaws and macaw feathers far and wide. Other areas imported raw turquoise from New Mexico and Arizona and worked the pieces into fine pendants for adornment. This jar is intact but for a few rim pieces that have been reattached and one hairline crack that has been stabilized. A fine and unusual example of the type.

This compact granny is seated with her legs tucked under her short tunic. She has large coffee bean eyes and a tight fitting cap still retaining its red pigment. Her right arm is resting on her hip and her left arm is held up...perhaps in a greeting gesture. She has a long pronounced nose. Her upper "female parts" leave no doubt that she has not been to see a plastic surgeon! Such charming humor in a piece of this age can't help but to remind us that our ancestors were not all stolid farmers seeking only to survive. She will make you smile and I will miss her...but I just have too many artifacts to keep her...time for a new home!

This fine line vessel depicts two abstract mythological zoomorphic fantastical saurian creatures outlined by wide black lines. Each has wicked claws and a long barbed fin projecting from the rear of the head. The circular pedestal base is unadorned and displays numerous mineral deposits. The vessel has been reassembled from several original segments with crack lines covered over. The design and brushwork are exceptional and created by a truly fine artist of the time.

This extraordinary artifact would have been used to reflect the face of its owner and most likely had magical powers associated with the image. The high nobles and rulers most often had them set in ornate stone or wooden holders to increase their claim to rule and make major decisions. The unmounted pieces such as this would have been used by the lesser nobles or perhaps by women to apply their makeup. They were often coated with several layers of oil or grease and polished to a high gloss to increase their usefulness. PROVENANCE: A New York Gallery
