Although this bowl has moderate professional restoration (reflected in the price) it is a Classic example of the Mimbres variety known as "negative" since the black paint far exceeds the white slipped background. The bowl is from Southern New Mexico and is legal for private ownership under all current Federal and State laws. The bowl is 4" in height by 10 1/2" in diameter and dates Ca. 1000 - 1250A.D. The slip is a pale gray and the design elements are charcoal black. The geometric designs include fine-line work, quadrangles, triangles, and wavy "lightning" elements as well as wide white stripes. It is a fine example of the type for a very fair price.
