Without a doubt this Nicoya offering vessel is exceptional in all ways. It comes from Costa Rica and dates Ca. - 1100 A.D. - 1300 A.D. The piece stands 6 1/4" in height and has a rectangular offering bowl resting on the shoulders. It represents a deity that is part bird, part man, part jaguar, along with condor heads projecting from each side. The paint is in excellent condition and it has numerous mineral deposits. The feet are jaguar/human and the face is human/jaguar. The feet have large ceramic balls which rattle freely. The extremely fine quality of the piece along with the woven mat designs indicate that this fantastical creation belonged to an individual of the very highest rank...perhaps a member of the royalty or a powerful shaman. It is best displayed on a rotating stand which will be included in the sale. If you are seeking the ultimate Nicoya creation...you are looking at it. Ex: Lost World Artifacts collection
