COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Ecuador
AGE: Ca. 200 - 600 A.D.
DESCRIPTION: A striking and impressive immense
Jamacoaque effigy head fragment measuring 9" in height by 7" in width by 6 1/2" in depth. The piece weighs 2 1/2 pounds. The bust represents a stylized feline with a ferocious countenance. He has a wide toothy mouth with bared fangs and a long extended tongue. He has large bulging globular eyes accented by heavy arching brows and a widely flared nose with open nostrils. Remnants of the original white pigment are present on the lower area below a necklace or collar circling his neck. He is mounted on a custom metal base in such a way that the base is hidden and the head appears to be standing on its own. The visual impact is fantastic and mesmerizing. PROVENANCE: A private California collection.
