COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Peru CULTURE: Huari / Central and South Coasts as well as Highlands. AGE: Ca. 600 - 800 A.D. DESCRIPTION: An intact polychrome globular vessel with handle and profuse ornamentation. The jar stands 5 1/2" in height by 4" in diameter. It is painted in colors of black, burnt orange, and a soft off-white. The head of the jar is an avian form with almond shaped black eyes accented with burnt orange elements below and above. The body of the vessel is encircled with three abstract birds and two undulating snake motifs. A fourth bird has taken wing above the scene. The birds on the ground appear to be fleeing to escape the snakes. There is a great deal of action happening on a jar of this size. Provenance: A New York Gallery/Auction House.
