CULTURE: Jama-Coaque ORINGIN: Ecuador/Manabi Provence/Coastal area AGE: Ca. 500 B.C. - 500 A.D. DESCRIPTION: A standing shaman figure mounted on a slab often called a "snuff palette" but actually used for inhaling ceremonial drug powders to help achieve an altered state. The piece measures 6 3/4" in height by 6" in length. He is clutching a large ceremonial staff or planting stick in his right hand. He is garbed in a highly stylized headpiece with a large addition (possibly an avian figure) crowning the center area. He is wearing a substantial heavy necklace, a wrist and knee length tunic with a center flap in front and raised elements in the rear, wrist cuffs, and ankle cuffs in the likeness of coffee beans. His mouth is slightly ajar indicating that he may be chanting. His eyes are incised and elongated almond shaped. Red and green after firing pigments are plentiful.
