CULTURE: Narino ORIGIN: Ecuador / high Andes plain near the border of Colombia AGE: Ca. 850 - 1500 A.D. DESCRIPTION: A polychrome pedestal footed bowl measuring 6 3/4" in diameter by 2 3/4” in height. The negative design colors are black, cream, and a rich cinnamon brown. The central design element which has the appearance of a flower most likely represents the planet Venus. It is flanked on both sides by a smaller version of the center design. Above and below the central motif are wide line upright and hanging triangles with “zig zag” lines enclosed...possibly representing mountains with the star above. There are wide white lines above and below that draw attention to the center design. The exterior is pale gold with faint remnants of wide white lines and there are numerous mineral deposits in the center pedestal attesting to its great age. The bowl appears to have been broken into several large pieces and professionally reassembled. It is a striking piece combining a great use of color combined with well thought out design elements.A great little bowl for the money!! PROVENANCE: A Scottsdale Arizona Gallery.
