RIO MAGDALENA BURIAL URN
AGE: CA. 800 A. D. - 1000 A. D.
An intact vessel measuring 15 " in overall height. The olla base is heavily incised with designs circling the jar. The lid is highly ornate with two applied anthropomorphic figures seated back to back on a bench. Each is holding an offering bowl and a ceremonial staff. They have flat faces with with incised mouths, eyes, and ear holes. There are heavily incised geometric designs at the base of the figures. It is a true rarity to find a matching set. Numerous dendrites attest to its great age. Two small areas of one of the figures were dislodged and professionally reattached. The piece has no new plaster. Ex: Stanley Marcus collection
