DESCRIPTION:A rare and impressive anthracite hand mirror from Peru. This extraordinary artifact would have been used to reflect the face of its owner and most likely had magical powers associated with the image.
The high nobles and rulers most often had them set in ornate stone or wooden holders to increase their claim to rule and make major decisions. The unmounted pieces such as this would have been used by the lesser nobles or perhaps by women to apply their makeup. They were often coated with several layers of oil or grease and polished to a high gloss to increase their usefulness. Minor professional restoration to a few small abraded areas on outer edge. ROVENANCE: A New York Gallery
