Culture: Maya Origin: Mexico/Central America/ Ca. 400-850A.D. Description: A finely and carefully modeled female terracotta ceremonial figure standing 7 1/2” in height by 4 1/2” at the widest point. The figure is staring confidently straight ahead with her arms folded inward grasping her breasts. She is adorned with a short square apron around her waist and large circular ear spools with wing-like extensions on each side and a wide collar. She is wearing a highly unusual headpiece in the form of an anthropomorphic figure with heavily lidded eyes as if in a trance and a simple semi-circular headdress. The figure has been drilled on each side above the arms and may have been attached to a dancer as part of a costume or strung and worn around the neck. The figure is a stately and elegant example of the abilities of a creative artist of the time.
