| PATRICK NAGEL ART In the 70s and 80s the lean, spare illustrations of provocative women — pale-skinned and red-lipped — by American graphic artist Patrick Nagel (1945 - 1984) captivated a generation and beyond. As a freelance artist Nagel accepted commissions from major corporations and magazines, including IBM, United Artists, MGM, Universal Studios, Architectural Digest, Rolling Stone, and a celebrated series of posters for American Express travelers checks. Even the famed rock group Duran Duran commissioned a memorable Nagel for the cover of their wildly popular 1982 Rio album, and from 1976 the artist illustrated the iconic “Nagel woman” with her piercing gaze that adorned the pages of Playboy magazine for eight years. Nagel’s work is reminiscent of Art Deco stylings but was primarily inspired by Japanese woodblock prints. His posters and graphics and rare paintings are typically composed of bold, dark lines that shape perspective out of flat, cool colors and stark white spaces. These works, often described as “fantasy realism,” are thoroughly contemporary and universal in appeal. Prime examples from his body of work are on exhibit in such prestigious institutions as the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian in Washington and at the Bibliotheque des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. The largest collection of his artworks is said to have been assembled by Hugh Hefner and is displayed at the Playboy Mansion. Patrick Nagel succumbed to a heart attack at the age of 38, and following his untimely death, his limited edition posters and graphics and original paintings have achieved a highly coveted status among discerning collectors of contemporary art. This particular piece is untitled and executed in acrylic on rag board. The image is of a woman with a postal meter, "Chicago PM 1978" stamped on her bare right buttock. The image dimensions are 7.5 by 12.5 while the board dimensions are 13.5 by 17.75. It was created in 1978 and is a signed one-of-a-kind work of art. It will be shipped unframed and is in excellent condition with only some barely perceptible age-foxing on the board outside of the image. It has been in my private collection for over 30 years. | ||
