| THIS CERAMIC IS A FINE EXAMPLE OF MOCHE FINELINE ART AT ITS BEST. The vessel is a canchero (aka “popper” or “dipper”) measuring 11” in length and 6 1/2" in diameter with a 4“ width. It dates from c.a.100-800AD and was created along the Northern coast of Peru. On one side the vessel depicts a ceremonial scene with an animated Moche warrior with a fierce determined face stalking a large bird armed with his large tumi (knife). The lower pigment of the piece is a soft ochre yellow fading into a light flesh colored slip above the warrior’s head. The warrior is wearing a tunic with rectangular designs with dots in the center along with an odd “S” shaped design on the short sleeve of the garment. He is wearing an ornate plumed headdress with a gaping animal head projecting from the front of a supporting band and has a serpent shaped belt encircling his lower tunic area. The snake-like creature is decorated with circles on its interior and ends in a feline head with a forked snake’s tongue. You will note a bird floating above the lower scene. According to the outstanding book “Moche Fineline Painting / Its Evolution and It’s Artists” by Christopher Donnan and Donna McClelland this motif was incorporated to indicate speed and action occuring in the scene. See page 195 of the book for a better explanation. The reverse side of the piece has an anthropomorphic figure atop the handle with round eyes and a deeply incised mouth. He is wearing a neckpiece and a polka dot headdress. The area surrounding the center opening is decorated with large dark brown rectangles. There are numerous mineral deposits attesting to its age. There has been light professional restoration to a probe hole area and very minor paint enhancement and the piece is otherwise intact and in excellent condition. The purchaser will receive a COA attesting to its authenticity. | ||
