A BOLDLY DECORATED MOCHE FINELINE CANCHERO
MOCHE FINELINE CANCHERO (DIPPER OR POPPER) This vessel is a fine example of an intact example of the creativity and craft of the Moche who inhabited Northern Peru from c.a.100-800AD. It measures 10 1/2 “ in height and 6 1/2” in width. The masterfully painted motif captures an elaborately attired Moche warrior with spotted tunic wearing a rounded helmet decorated with plumes and a large round earspool brandishing a war club and resolutely preparing to strike the death blow to the frightened deer he has captured in the netting pictured below. The scene takes place in the scrubby desert area as evidenced by the various forms of plantlife in the background. Deer hunting was a highly ritualized form of sacrifice that could be practiced by only the highest ranks of warriors and nobles. It was forbidden to other lower placed members of the community. The reverse side of the piece has a swirling octupus-like motif surrounding the open center of the ladle. This is another addition illumniating the fine craftsmanship and imagination of the potter and his carefully concieved creation. There are numerous mineral deposits which help attest to the authenticity of the piece and it will include a full COA. For many fine examples of deer hunting scenes you should purchase the outstanding book ” Moche Fineline Painting/Its Evolution and Its Artists” by Christopher Donnand and Donna McClelland. It is fully illustrated with color plates of Moche work and explains a great deal to the novice or seasoned researcher concerning the iconography created by the Moche potters.
