| This skillfully modeled globular Moche canchero (also sometimes referred to as a “popper” or “dipper” comes from Northern Peru and dates from c.a. 100-800AD. It stands 11 1/2” in height and 7” at its widest diameter. The background color is a deep flesh tone and the decorative motifs are a rich tangerine/orange.. The end of the handle is adorned with the confident expressive face of a warrior or noble with a slightly downturned crescent mouth and almond shaped eyes. He has large disc shaped ear spools along with a conical helmet and chin strap. The painted side of the canchero is decorated with a 7” long compisite creature representing a fierce snarling feline with extended claws and tongue. The tail ends with the body of a serpent and the head of another creature. The interior spotted designs of the feline are peanut shaped and may have symbolic meaning. The scene is taking place in the desert as there are three stylized cactus designs below and to the side of the feline. The upper rim has horizontal “s” shaped forms with inverted triangles below ending in round medallions. The head was damaged in shipping and has been professionally restored to its original form and the vessel is otherwise intact and will come with a COA. It is a fine piece at a very fair price. | ||
