EDO p. Japanese Sumi-e KANO SCREEN, EIGAKU

An oversized 6-panel sumi-e Kano style landscape drawn with Nanga flair signed Eigaku. Kano Eigaku (no dates) was in direct descent (7th generation) from Kano Eitoku, and was most active during the Tempo era (1830-1844). Massive tree covered crags jut up from the seaside, while gnarly firs and pines dwarf travelers making their way towards a thatched hut built on stilts over the water. Light washes of gray form mist and rolling mountains in the distance. Typical wear to outfacing hinge edges from handling, as well as heavy wear to the cloth border and a few scattered stains are the only noteworthy damage. The heavy screen retains the original backing paper and black lacquered wooden frame, which does have some scarring. The screen measures 71 by 149 inches (181 by 378 cm), which is slightly taller than normal.
