A set of ten cups decorated with a unique poem and painting of the Five Nobles, (Bamboo, Orchid, Plum, Pine and Chrysanthemum, also known as the five Gentlemen). The cups were made by Mikuni Tanyu, and decorated by Nishimura Goun. Perfectly formed, each is delicately painted with a short verse and one of the five representatives of scholarly virtue. Each cup is 7.5 cm (3 inches) diameter, 4.5 cm (2 inches) tall and in excellent condition. Mikuni Tanyu of Kyoto learned potting under the tutelage of porcelain master Miura Chikusen. Nishimura Goun (1877-1938) was a prominent Pupil of Kishi Chikudo and Takeuchi Seiho. He showed at the Nihon Bijutsu Kyokai (Japan Art Association) and then with the Zenkoku Kaiga Kyoshinkai (National Competitive Painting Exhibition). He was awarded at the first Bunten National Exhibition (1907) and later served as a judge at that prestigious event. Later in life he would be named a member of the Imperial Art Academy. Works by him are held in many private collections as well as the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, Yamane Museum and the Gotoh Museum among many others. |
