Antique Tsutsugaki Hanten with Conch Horn Pattern
The circles of Bonji (Sanskrit) on the sleeves and the conch horn (used by samurai and priests) indicate this Hanten cotton jacket may have been worn by a pilgrim or someone in the trade of supplying religious objects. Later 19th century, it is in excellent condition.
The design is made in the resist technique where a pattern is drawn (usually with rice paste) before the cloth dyed. When the resist is washed away it leaves the pattern in negative.
