Kimono Hand painted by Kobayakawa Kiyoshi
A full length Furisode (long sleeved) kimono hand-painted with autmn grasses and flowers by famous Ukiyo-e and woodblock artist Kobayakawa Kiyoshi.
There are mildew stains on this kimono, but we have had it professionally cleaned. These are from the same Kyoto residence as the gold and silver fusuma doors recently listed.
Kiyoshi was famous for bijin-ga, an art he learned under the artist Kaburagi Kiyokata. He exhibited with the prestigious Teiten first in 1924. The Teiten (earlier Bunten, later Nitten) were the National exhibitions held annually in Japan, to be accepted one of the highest honors bestowed on Japanese Artists. Kiyoshi was elected for exhibition there consistently until the War and his untimely death in 1948. This scroll measures 22 by 86 inches (55.5 x 219 cm) and is in perfect condition. Among others, works by the artist are held in the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art.
