Set 5 HP Lacquered Plates by Tanomura Chokuso
A set of five Tame-nuri lacquered wooden dishes decorated with ink paintings of seasonal flowers by Tanomura Chokuso enclosed in the original wooden box made for the Zohiko studio of Kyoto. Enclosed is still the very rare original calling card of the artist. Each dish is roughly 6 inches (15 cm) square and in fine condition. The box is darkened with age.
Tanomura Chokuso was the grandson of Tanomura Chokunyu (1814-1907), one of the most important artists coming into the modern era. Born in Kyoto the third child of Tanomura Shosai (1845-1909) and studied Nanga under his auspicious grandfather.
