A pluck little bird clings delicately to the wispy upper reaches of a blossoming cherry in this lovely scroll signed Kakutei. It measures 22 by 75 inches (56 x 191 cm) and has been freshly mounted in fine blue-gray silk with dark wood rollers. The only person listed we have found in this period to have used the name Kakutai is the Shijo artist Morikawa Sobun (1847-1902). Obviously by an artist of great talent, we have not been able to find a copy of his signature used with this name. However everything about the painting speaks of an artist of high stature, and it is very likely this painting is by Sobun The scroll is 7 feet (214 cm) long, 22 inches (56 cm) wide and in excellent condition.
