A screen featuring the gate at Hikone Castle by Honjo Toen exhibited at the 1927 Teiten (mod. Nitten) National Exhibition Pigment on silk in a brocade border with original red lacquered wooden frame and cloth backing. It is in overall fine condition. Some chips in the lacquer frame have been filled, and some water marks are present in the center and upper left of the screen. It is 187 x 140 cm (73-1/2 x 55 inches).
Toen was born in Hyogo prefecture in 1900. He studied at the Kyoto Special School of painting (modern Kyoto University of Art) under Nishiyama Suisho and exhibited (as with this piece) at the Teiten National Exhibition on many occasions.
